Southampton Common
Southampton Common is the largest and one of the oldest open spaces in the city. The Common features 365 acres of woodland, grassland, ponds, wetlands and lakes, with these diverse habitats providing an oasis to support an array of wildlife. Much of the area has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). The Common is popular with city residents, providing an escape from the hustle and bustle of the city, as well as a backdrop for informal leisure activities and large events.
Within the Common is a large nature play and water park. Designed for adventurous play, the park features zip wires, a climbing tower, traditional swings, slides and roundabouts, whilst the fun water features encourage imaginative play. There is lots of seating and benches within the fenced area, ideal for picnics. During weekends and school holidays there is a refreshment kiosk selling ice cream, drinks and hot and cold food. There is an onsite toilet and baby changing area that is open when the kiosk is open. Nearby there is also the Hawthorns Urban Wildlife Centre and café with indoor seating and toilets.
The Wildlife Centre is situated in the South East of the Common, and provides information about the local wildlife and their efforts to increase biodiversity. The Hawthorns garden is open weekdays between 11am – 3pm and Sundays noon – 4pm if a volunteer is available. However, this is subject to change at short notice. Aspects of the garden can be viewed from the café terrace.
You can contact the centre by email on hawthorns@southampton.gov.uk or telephone 023 8067 1921. For information about the Hawthorns café please call 07872 429392.
